In 2000, on a trip to Paris, Laura Dowling made a decision to change her career. This change from strategic communications to flowers, eventually led Laura Dowling to the White House in 2009. After that trip to Paris, Laura became fascinated with French floral design and studied in Paris and Germany.
Upon returning home to Alexandria, Virginia, she established her floral business and design studio. Starting in the fall of 2009, Laura joined the White House staff as Chief Floral Designer and served in that position thru 2015. As the sixth person in this position, she managed floral design and installation for State Dinners, official parties and special receptions. Public events and family gatherings for the First Family also were under her supervision. Even robotic floral versions of the First Family’s dogs were created by Laura and her team!
Laura has been an annual presenter at the Philadelphia Flower Show, featured in magazines (December issue of FLOWER), appeared on HGTV and given a TED talk. Laura has authored two books, FLORAL DIPLOMACY AT THE WHITE HOUSE and A WHITE HOUSE CHRISTMAS. She is in high demand as a speaker and floral presenter. The Garden Club of Norfolk is thrilled to be hosting her first visit to Norfolk for a floral presentation and book signing, February 1, 2018.
